Trigger. Client request, proof being one of: Aadhaar (preferred via DigiLocker re-fetch), utility bill < 3 months old, passport, recent bank statement.

Key rule changes (SEBI Jan 2025).

  • Percentage allocation per nominee must sum to exactly 100%.
  • Opt-out (no nominee) requires a video declaration within 30 days.

Proof validation. Client identity re-verification via eSign. Nominee details captured but nominee KYC not required until transmission event.

Propagation. Nominee data is held by the depository (CDSL / NSDL) primarily, with copy in broker master. KRA / CKYC don’t store nominee data. Exchange UCC has a nominee flag but not the nominee details.

So the propagation chain for nominee change is simpler:

Trigger. Client toggles a segment (F&O / CD / COM / debt).

Proof validation.

  • Adding CD or debt is generally lighter — declaration only.
  • Dropping any segment requires confirmation of no open positions in that segment.

Propagation. Exchange UCC update (segment activation flag) is the primary touchpoint. KRA / CKYC also updated with declared income or segment-elections list. BO at depository doesn’t need segment data.

Sub-case — MCX segment add. MCX requires income proof for ALL commodity-segment clients (not just F&O). The income proof requirement applies regardless of declared income level on MCX.

Sub-case — segment auto-disable from dormancy. When a dormant account reactivates, segments are re-activated as a modification — but the income-proof requirement (for F&O/COM) re-applies per current rules, even if the client had F&O active before dormancy.

Trigger. Client request.

Proof validation. OTP re-verification — OTP sent to the new mobile / email, confirmed by the client. Some brokers also send a confirmation notice to the old mobile / email as an anti-fraud step.

Propagation. Standard KRA → CKYC → UCC → BO chain. DLT comms templates also need updating with the new contact details for subsequent messaging.

Trigger. Client request, with legal proof (marriage certificate, court order, deed-poll, etc.).

Proof validation. Manual review by compliance officer; document authenticity verified against issuing authority where possible.

Propagation. This is the most complex modification path:

  • KRA + CKYC updated with new name / DOB.
  • BSE specifically uses the “Unfreeze” process — the existing UCC is frozen, the new identity is validated through Protean (PAN + Aadhaar + new DOB / new name 3-parameter check), and the UCC is re-opened in the new identity.
  • NSE / MCX have parallel modification flows that don’t use “Unfreeze” terminology but require similar 3-parameter re-validation.
  • Depository BO updated.

Sub-case — PAN-Aadhaar link state changes. If a name change reflects a real Aadhaar update (e.g., post-marriage), the PAN-Aadhaar link status at NSDL may need to refresh. Typical lag 5–7 days.

When the propagation fails partway, recovery follows specific patterns:

  • KRA rejection — modification doesn’t propagate further. Resolve the KRA rejection (typical causes: format error, name-mismatch, document-quality issue), re-upload, then chain continues.
  • CKYC rejection after KRA success — CKYC has stricter character limits (55 per line for some address fields). Trim or normalize and re-upload.
  • UCC rejection after KRA + CKYC success — exchange validates against Protean’s view of the new KRA state. If Protean hasn’t caught up (typical lag a few hours), retry. If Protean shows mismatch, escalate to KRA reconciliation team.
  • BO rejection after KRA + CKYC + UCC success — typically a CDSL line-format or NSDL UDiFF schema issue. Fix format and re-upload.
